Fireflies Therapy on BBC Radio Kent.

I was recently invited to speak on BBC Radio to discuss the importance of play in children’s development, in light of the newly published State of Play Report.

This national report has raised concerns about the decline in opportunities for play—both in schools and in communities. It highlights the growing need for spaces, time, and support for children to play freely, especially as more children face rising levels of anxiety, loneliness, and academic pressure.

As a registered Play Therapist, I spoke about how play is not a luxury—it’s a necessity for emotional growth, resilience, and communication. In my work at Fireflies Therapy, I see every day how powerful play can be in helping children process their experiences, express difficult emotions, and build confidence.

Whether it’s trauma recovery, emotional regulation, or social connection, play provides the tools children need to thrive, not just cope.

The Children's Mental Health Charter is a vital initiative aimed at promoting the mental well-being of young people. I am proud to support this important cause by raising awareness and advocating for accessible mental health resources for children and their families. By collaborating with local organizations and participating in community events, I strive to create a supportive environment where children's voices are heard and their mental health needs are prioritized. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of our children and ensure they have the support they need to thrive.
